Review Of Criminal Minds Episode 8.20 “Alchemy”

Here is a wonderful review of Criminal Minds Episode 8.20 “Alchemy”. It is written by Meredith Jacobs over at The Examiner. “Alchemy was written by Sharon Lee Watson and Directed by series star Matthew Gray Gubler.

CRM3220-promos_thumb_640x360

Matthew Gray Gubler once again directed such a good episode of “Criminal Minds,” and like his previous episodes, Wednesday, May 1′s 820, “Alchemy,” was nice and creepy—but with a surprise sad ending!

“Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?”

Unsurprisingly, this “Criminal Minds”episode was filled with creepy imagery, from the skin-like walls to the creepy kid walking around to the old woman vision to the final image of Tess. And a lodge was the perfect setting for it. Really, it was exactly what you expect from a Gubler-directed episode (and he once again did an amazing job behind the camera). However, what wasn’t expected was the way it ended, as it didn’t end on a sinister note but instead on a very sweet one.

It was Reid who made the connection that put the team on the case, as since he wasn’t sleeping (more about that later), he found it in one of the 38 small town papers he subscribed to, (“It used to be more, but a lot of them disappeared,” he explained. “You mean gone digital,” Rossi said. “Same thing.” Oh Reid, you and technology, please don’t ever change.) Two men were found dismembered with cupping marks on them within an hour’s drive of each other, the first on reservation land. They figured out they were dealing with a male-female team, with the female experiencing Black Widow Maternal Desire after losing a child. She was trying to get pregnantto replace the child she had lost, and she blamed the child’s father for her loss. They profiled her partner as the submissive. However, as it turned out, they did get part of the profile wrong. Tess had lured in a new victim in Chad, and after a couple of nights together, she dosed him. “We should’ve saved him, you know it was our fault,” she told him as he collapsed.

“Do you know what real pain is? That hollow ache? That gaping hole that comes from senseless tragedy? No you don’t. You live in blissful ignorance like all the happy-go-lucky people who have no idea that darkness is a whisper away.”

It was after a visit to the bar where Tess had found Chad that JJ and Rossi realized that the female unsub had played on his protective instincts after Rossi talked to a woman (“That was the fourth Mrs. Rossi, if I’m not careful,” he commented to JJ) Chad had turned down. They began looking into the local hotels since Chad had checked out of his the night he disappeared, and they eventually put the pieces together. Twenty years ago, a man had received permission to stay on the reservation to study medicinal herbs but was kicked out when he was suspected of poisoning someone with the same toxin found in their victims. Roger became Raoul, the owner of the lodge—and husband of Tess.

However, Tess did realize—a bit too late—that Raoul had been manipulating her into killing these abusive ex surrogates, the men (her lovers) who were “threats” to the sanctity of their vows, and Chad took the opportunity presented and attacked Raoul. The team burst in in time to save Chad and arrest Raoul, but they were too late for Tess, who was already dead in the same lake where her son drowned when they got there.

“I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.”

Reid hadn’t been sleeping because he dreamed of Maeve when he did. “When I see her, I feel the sweetest relief imaginable. She always asks me to dance, but I can’t because I don’t know how to dance and because I never even got to touch her when she was alive,” he explained to Rossi. “I know if I give into that fantasy, I’ll be lost forever, so I force myself to wake up.” Rossi eventually offered up some advice: “It’s alchemy. Alchemy turns common metals into precious ones. Dreams work the same way, turning something awful into something better.” He advised him not to think, just to sleep. And so Reid did, leading to a surprising sad and touching ending to an otherwise eerie episode. He dreamed he and Maeve were in a library, and after a so cute debate over Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and their location (Oxford versus Edinburgh), she asked him to dance. “I want to hold you once before I’m a ghost of a memory,” she explained, and so they danced. It was beautiful and sad and touching and perfect and just what Reid needed.

Review Of Criminal Minds Episode 8.21 “Nanny Dearest”

Here is a review of Criminal Minds Episode 8.21 “Nanny Dearest” written by MatthewGrayGublerFans member Jasmine.

CM s8e21

“Nanny Dearest” Episode 8×21
Written by Virgil Williams

“Children are educated by what the growing is, and not by his talk” Carl Young

“Nanny Dearest” is about a case that has followed the BAU for the past 6 years. The Unsub would kidnap a Nanny around the beginning of the month of May, leaving them to be found on May 13th somewhere in the area of Los Angeles. Being only a couple of weeks before May 13th, the BAU reopens the case, only in hopes to catch the unsub before a new Nanny is found dead.

The Unsub had a few signature M.O’s. One, taking the Nanny with the child at the same time, but leaving the child unharmed at a hospital or church 24 hrs. after the abduction. Secondly, burning the bodies with cigarettes, leaving holes all over the victims. Thirdly, drowning the Nannies finally in boiling water. And fourthly, leaving their bodies somewhere in Los Angeles (particularly Griffith Park) to be found on the exact date of May 13.

The information, though a lot, is not enough to catch the Unsub and JJ and Morgan must go to Seattle to convince the only surviving victim to try and recreate their memories of the incident and look for clues. She refuses to help them, the memories too hard to face, and with the confirmation of their doctor, they leave to join the rest of the team. Tara sees the parents of the missing child on the news (after JJ tells Hotch to make the press conference national) and decides to help the team.

Tara was put through a procedure that was new to the viewers called EMDR where the subject would look into a series of lights flashing back and forth in front of her connecting her brain’s memories and making her remember repressed memories. The treatment worked, making her remember another victim and the Unsub’s dog, giving them the clues to identify
him. We learned than the reason for his murders was that he was mistreated by his Nanny, and let his little sister drown in a
bathtub when he was a child. Once his childhood Nanny died, it triggered him to take it out on other Nannies since he didn’t
get his revenge on his own.

The episode remained entertaining throughout, especially when the Unsub decides to change things up when he does not return
Phoebe within his usual 24 hours. We have a scene before commercial where the Unsub fills the tub with water, and
carries the baby to the tub, leaving us traumatized by the thought that he may indeed drown the child in scalding water. Watching the Nanny being burned with cigarettes was also rather disturbing.

We were left with a sense of sadness for the Nanny and the child when we met the parents of Phoebe, knowing then that the little girl was asthmatic and the Nanny was a young woman without parents. Also when we saw the nanny begging the Unsub to help Phoebe with her asthma medication when he kept saying she doesn’t care also made me sad.

I have to make notice on one moment that I enjoyed. The Nanny finally had gotten to help Phoebe with her medication. It was heart warming and amazing to hear her sing this lullaby “a la nanita nana” while she gave her the medication. I heard this song once before and I found it to be just as beautiful. The moment to me was uplifting and sweet and it made me want to learn the song for my future children.

On another note, I was rather disappointed that Rossi’s one liners that we have been used to this season were absent in this episode, as well as Garcia and Morgan’s usual sexy banter. I was though, happy though that JJ had more facetime, this season seemingly have cut her onscreen time drastically. It was nice to see Will again as well as Henry, who was last seen dressed up as Reid for Halloween. Her scenes in the beginning and end were short and I’m hoping we do see more of a personal story from JJ in the future.

The episode was very well written and exciting, but I felt lacked the personal moments between the agents and even though was
a focus on JJ’s life, with the lack of storyline throughout the season, I felt it was missing a lot. Hopefully, the future will hold more story lines for JJ.

Matthew Gray Gubler Interviewed By The West Australian

Recently, Sue Yeap of The West Australian had the opportunity to conduct a phone interview with Matthew Gray Gubler, touching on everything from Alvin and the Chipmunks, and directing Criminal Minds, to eating a burrito while on Shemar Moore’s back? Take a look into the quirky and eccentric man we like to call “The Gube”.

tn-500_103109_d0051b

Matthew Gray Gubler is known to many adult TV viewers as young genius Spencer Reid from the FBI’s serial killer-tracking Behavioural Analysis Unit on the hit series Criminal Minds.

Yet there’s a whole younger generation of film goers and DVD watchers who know Gubler not by appearance but as the voice of Simon in the Alvin and the Chipmunks animated movie franchise.

“Oh yeah, I love that,” Gubler enthused on the phone from Los Angeles.

“I am very fortunate I have done a lot of cartoon work. It’s great kids know me as something else and their parents know me as the weird pale guy who looks at dead bodies on TV. It is nice to span the ages like that.”

Show business was something that always beckoned Gubler, who grew up in Las Vegas and still calls it home when not filming Criminal Minds in Los Angeles.

“I love it all, I love entertaining, I grew up in Las Vegas,” he said.

“I wanted to be a magician when I was a child. Then I found the magic of filmmaking and loved acting in my own stupid movies.

“I sort of pursued filmmaking because I knew it was a more controlled vocation. As a director, you can make decisions and things happen, as an actor you’re waiting for a director to find you, for the right script that you can try out for.

“I like doing it all equally. I have had a great deal of good luck as an actor which has allowed me to accomplish what I studied, directing.”

The New York film school graduate and former model, who has music videos and a handful of Criminal Minds episodes under his directing belt, got his chance to act while working with Wes Anderson on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou in 2004.

“He is the one who gave me an amazing opportunity of being an actor so I feel a great deal of gratitude and awe,” said Gubler.

“He is my favourite living director and I still can’t believe I was in one of his movies.

“If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be on Criminal Minds. He turned me into an actor.”

Gubler, 33, is in his eighth season of Criminal Minds and now switching into the mode of the quirky, super-intelligent Reid is second nature.

“I wanted him to be sort of like Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, to have a timeless out-of-step quality,” he explained. “So the research I did wasn’t necessarily in the crime-ness of it all.

“I studied a lot of people with Asperger’s syndrome and sort of got familiar with their speech patterns, their eye contact and stuff like that and based him on a couple of people I know in real life who are eccentrics I have always thought were compelling.

“So, the way Spencer wears his watch over a sleeve is a shout out to a friend of mine.”

Gubler has directed two episodes this season, adding his own stylistic stamp.

He said that he tried to make his episodes “other worldly” so it was fun and a different type of Criminal Minds show.

“As I have done more and the weird ones I have done have worked, they have let me have more ‘carte blanche’ when it comes to the strangeness. They asked me to do two this year so I guess they like what I am doing as a director.”

He prefers the episodes that are on the stranger side than the ones featuring horrific violence.

“I like anything that has the element of surreal whimsy to it,” he explained.

“I like the episodes with people being turned into human dolls, things that are more imaginative are always exciting to me as an actor and a director.

“If I had it my way, our show would be more like The Twilight Zone meets Twin Peaks.”

The accomplished artist, who began sketching as a way of killing time while waiting between scenes on the set of Criminal Minds, is prolific on social media and his website, matthewgraygubler.com, aka Gublerland.

“I have the best fans in the world,” he enthused. “I love the internet in that, if you love to entertain people, it is just a new form of short entertainment – whether it is like a stupid picture of me eating a burrito while riding on Shemar’s (co-star Shemar Moore) back, whether it is a picture I have drawn or a video or something.

“I love the fans and I like the idea of hopefully brightening someone’s day with a stupid sentence about nonsense.”

Matthew Gray Gubler And A.J. Cook Endorse New “Swim Guide” App

Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we have this news about the new “Swim Guide” App being released this week  from The Waterkeeper Alliance. Here is their exclusive video of Matthew Gray Gubler and A.J. Cook demonstrating how it works.

matthew_gray_gubler_aj_cook_-_h_2013

A.J. Cook and Matthew Gray Gubler plug The Swim Guide App from Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Waterkeeper Alliance.

On CBS’ Criminal Minds, stars A.J. Cook and Matthew Gray Gubler spend their time tracking down bad guys. In real life, the pair are keen on tracking down safe, pollution-free beaches, and they’ve found the app they need to do it.

In a new video, which is exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, Cook and Gubler walk viewers through version 2.0 of The Swim Guide from Robert F. Kennedy‘s Waterkeeper Alliance. The app, being released this week, helps users to locate nearby beaches and check if their waters are safe for swimming.

“The Waterkeeper Swim Guide app is one of the coolest I’ve seen, because I live at the beach,” says Cook in the video. “I have a son. I sometimes worry about the water.”

The stars go on to talk about the app’s report pollution feature, which allows one to report possible trouble in the water.

“If you see something there, you click the report pollution button,” Gubler says. “You describe your concern. You can add a photo even.”

Kennedy praised the app, which uses government data to keep tabs on nearly 5,000 beaches.

“The Swim Guide re-connects communities with their waterways by telling people how to find the closest beach and if it safe to swim when they get there,” said Kennedy, president of the Waterkeeper Alliance.  “An informed public is the foundation stone of a functioning democracy by makingwater quality data easily available.  This app will promote healthy public debate about the costs of pollution to our communities.”

The Swim Guide is available from App Store, Google Play, or www.theswimguide.com.

The Waterkeeper Alliance is a network of 207 water protection groups worldwide.

Review Of Criminal Minds Episode 22 “#6″

$
0
0

Thanks to the lovely Jasmine, we once again have a review of last weeks Criminal Minds Episode 22 “#6″. Here’s her take on what happened.

This weeks episode entitled “#6″ was the last episode of season 8 before the 2 hour season finale airing next week.

The episode focused on a closer look of new member of the BAU, Agent Alex Blake.  We were taken into her personal life, when she receives a call from her husband, supposedly oversees, who surprises her by showing up at her doorstep of their home.  Blake tries to find out why he has returned unannonced, but we only find out later on in the episode.

Meanwhile, the BAU must investigate the murder of married couples found in the trunks of their cars.  The couples were both found to be stabbed to death repeatably in the greater Detroit area.  The BAU goes off to investigate the crimes and are faced with weird questions, that are well handled by the team.  Rossi and Blake go to the coroner to find that the victims had all different stab wounds, showing that the unsub would be at a different height from each victim, whether the stab wounds would be aiming down or straight across.  Blake, after attempting a reanactment with Rossi, realises that the unsub is making the couples stab each other.  Morgan and JJ also have a puzzle on figuring out how the unsub manipulates both victims to get in their car without risking any chance at failure.  They realise then that the unsub is in fact hacking into their alarm systems and that even if the victims think they lock their car doors, only the sound is activated but not the car locks.  Reid  also finds out at the same time that the unsub follows his victims during date night for the couples, showing that the unsub is studying his victims prior to the kidnapping.

The unsub then changes his M.O. when he kidnaps his last victim, a woman, out on a date alone only because her husband had to cancel for a work assignment.   They find her body in a car trunk and the husband still alive.   The BAU must now track a new victim, a male victim, who is taken to replace the husband, or victim #6 as they call him.

The team digs further into the car hacking, realising that the unsub also erases all the GPS tracking from their onboard computer.  Needing answers and quickly, since the unsub has taken another female victim, Reid and Hotch go to see the leaders of 3 car companies to ask for their personel information on the GPS tracking of these particular cars.  They deny having acces to that kind of information, until Reid presents them with the fact that when you read the fine print in the GPS contract, that they do indeed take all the information on their onboard computer but for only internal uses.

Narrowing down the field of missing white males, they finally find out that victim #6, through an interview with his mother, that he is indeed the unsub, a mentally unstable man who likes cutting himself.  Garcia tracks the location of the unsub and it’s up to Blake to use the unsub’s ex wife as manipulation into letting go his current victim and finally putting him into custody.

During this episode, we find out that Blake’s husband actually got offered a better paying job at Harvard and wants Blake to quit the BAU to join him working there as well.  He uses his power of veto, something they had discussed in their marriage, to try and get Blake to leave the FBI.  Finally, after considering the options of losing her husband or leaving the FBI and getting advice from a still heartbroken Reid, Blake decides that she will stay with the FBI and luckily her husband also decides to stay with Blake, despite her decision.

The episode was well written and creepy.  I enjoyed watching the manipulation of the unsub.  His hacking of their car’s systems to kidnap the couples, his frustrated and angry disposition when he removes the knife from his first kill, and the way he tries to get his last victim to kill herself with him so she isn’t left alone with this phantom killer.  The recorded images of the man in the creepy mask on the television screen was also well done, and made a chill run up my spine everytime I saw him.

I also enjoyed the teamwork in this episode, particularly when Blake realizes that the victims are hurting each other, causing Blake and Rossi to fist bump.  I also enjoyed Dr. Reid’s role in this episode.  I have a personal enjoyment when he plays the underdog, using his brains to show the dealership leaders that the BAU is not a team to be messed with, especially when they have a genius with eidetic memory.  It also made me laugh when he ask Blake if he could give her advice, only to tell her that she missed the house and had to turn around to go back.    His advice was also bittersweet, reminding us again of his loss of Maeve, and also making us think that we may indeed lose Blake, who I personally really started to love.

Though it lacked the one liners of Rossi yet again, we did get some Garcia frustration and amazing team work in this episode.  I enjoyed how Breen put them in partnerships making them solve puzzles along side each other.  The unsub was creepy and had enough surprise twists that it kept us on our toes.  And finally the personal Blake story, introduced us to the newest member of the BAU, sealing our love for the new member.  After this episode, I cannot wait to see what the 2 part season finale will be.  Who is staying?  Who is leaving? Only time will tell.

Matthew Gray Gubler of the CBS drama “Criminal Minds” served as host during a fashion show and dinner benefiting the American Lung Association on May 10 at the Las Vegas Country Club.

With a theme of “Set Sail with Saks,” the event was co-chaired by Marilyn Gubler, the actor’s mother, and Annette Kinsman.

Matthew was born in Las Vegas and comes from an early Nevada pioneer family. He graduated from New York University’s film school and is an actor, film director and sketch artist.

The reception in the club’s Rotunda Room included a silent auction for designer items, restaurant dinners, vacations, sports tickets, jewelry, art and autographed TV scripts. The live auction offered two VIP tickets for Fleetwood Mac and a meet and greet after the May 26 concert.

The dinner, with wine provided by Southern Wine and Spirits, took place on the club’s patio, which was decorated overhead with shipboard white lights centered to a crystal chandelier. Lonnie Hammargren provided the keyboard accompaniment. A seven-member group from Martin Middle School called TATU, or Teens Against Tobacco Use, entertained with an educational skit.

A highlight of the evening was The Best of Saks Fashion Show. Saks Fifth Avenue presented swimsuits, summer long dresses, cocktail wear and summer sports clothes for both women and men by designers Ferragamo, St. John, Robert Graham, Elie Tahari, Roberto Cavalli, Josie Natori, Eileen Fisher and Monique Lhuillier, to name a few.

Seen among the guests were Thomas DiGiacomo, Williston Dye, Wendy and Paul Bell, April Stewart, Candy and Ed Wilson, Rachel and Rick Hunt, Gloria Banks Weddle, Sharry and Tim Quillin, Darlene and Cliff Miller, Beverly Dix, Beth Schwartz, Sandy Hammargren, Mark Cannerdy, Sheila Dalo, Rob Kachelriess and Brittney Tanzer, Tami and Bill Corbin, Karen Staples, Cindy Pino, Rachael Dilling, Lynda Tanner Delgado, Carlos Monrreal, Agnes Winder, Deomoni Brewington, Barbara White, Brenda Bogue, and Laura Gubler Dahl and Timothy Dahl, and son, Hunter.
